Artist Statement: Ceramics
This year of ceramics has to be one of my favorite years of art. By far my best piece, although not finished, would have to be my Art Nouveau tile project. This project consisted of three ceramic tiles that were six inches each. Due to the school being shut down I’m not able to finish it but, hopefully we will be back in school soon so I can pick right back up where I left off. For this art piece I wanted to make it a little more personal and organized than my past pieces. So I got brainstorming and searching for cool doodles that I could transform into three ceramic tiles. As I was browsing on google there was this image of three drawings that showed three different settings. One had a van at a campsite, the other had a tent with a campfire, and the last one had just a cloudy night setting. Once I saw this I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to make three things of my own I loved to do. Nights camping, days at the beach and weeks of traveling in a 1964 Volkswagen minivan. Having these three circles of adventure with banners at the bottom presenting short and sweet catchphrases was my plan for my art nouveau. But for now since the project is incomplete my second favorite piece is my fruit themed tea set. There wasn't any particular motive for the tea set theme, except that I thought it would be awesome to make a huge pineapple style tea kettle with big fruit teacups. Even though some parts didn’t come out as I imagined, I still think it looks awesome! Art is amazing in so many different ways. Not only does it teach about how to actually roll out a coil and score, slip and stick, but it teaches you patience and commitment. Even when you aren’t feeling it, you had to persevere, because if you didn’t you would never get to see the end result and would've got a bad grade! So perseverance is a word that applies to art and life. Both have adventure, creativity and require perseverance |
