Pottery Studio in Art My artwork is a piece of pottery that I made with high expectations and it came out better than I expected. The piece is a large and wide vase /container. It has different textures along the pot with vines popping out at you and a realistic flower at the top of the piece as a lid. It has different colors all around the piece of artwork, some that are just one specific color and some that are popping and bursting with different colors. I used the coil method to make the middle part of the container and the slab method to make the bottom of the pot. A rose with vines inspired me to make the pot and the design because I think that roses are like some types of people. They are very beautiful on the inside but they put walls up or in this case thorns to protect themselves from what could hurt them making people think that they should just leave them alone because they look and they feel like they can hurt you. I think the piece of artwork is misshapen and not perfect but no one is because everyone has their flaws but it's still beautiful and it's still very pretty. |
Artist Statement: Brooke C. Art Nouveau Tile & Tea Set
Ceramics This year of ceramics has to be one of my favorite years of art. By far my best piece, although not finished, would have to be my Art Nouveau tile project. This project consisted of three ceramic tiles that were six inches each. Due to the school being shut down I’m not able to finish it but, hopefully we will be back in school soon so I can pick right back up where I left off. For this art piece I wanted to make it a little more personal and organized than my past pieces. So I got brainstorming and searching for cool doodles that I could transform into three ceramic tiles. As I was browsing on google there was this image of three drawings that showed three different settings. One had a van at a campsite, the other had a tent with a campfire, and the last one had just a cloudy night setting. Once I saw this I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to make three things of my own I loved to do. Nights camping, days at the beach and weeks of traveling in a 1964 Volkswagen minivan. Having these three circles of adventure with banners at the bottom presenting short and sweet catchphrases was my plan for my art nouveau. But for now since the project is incomplete my second favorite piece is my fruit themed tea set. There wasn't any particular motive for the tea set theme, except that I thought it would be awesome to make a huge pineapple style tea kettle with big fruit teacups. Even though some parts didn’t come out as I imagined, I still think it looks awesome! Art is amazing in so many different ways. Not only does it teach about how to actually roll out a coil and score, slip and stick, but it teaches you patience and commitment. Even when you aren’t feeling it, you had to persevere, because if you didn’t you would never get to see the end result and would've got a bad grade! So perseverance is a word that applies to art and life. Both have adventure, creativity and require perseverance. |
Artist Statement: Lizzy W.My art piece looks like three parts that connect together with a leather string. Subject matter that went into this piece of art would be my rabbit dying last year. What shows the most in this art piece would be bas relief on the paw prints and carrot also shows is the incising on the dates.
How I created my piece of art was from my own brain and using the clay to help get what I was thinking on paper to come alive. The tools I used were a loop tool and sponge to soften around the clay and my own hands mostly. What inspired me to make something like this was thinking on what I loved the most and I loved my rabbit the most out of everything. My piece is showing a personal connection and using the bas relief to make the middle pop more. There was a little goal and that goal was to make that piece look good and take my time and fix mistakes if needed and normally I wouldn’t care as much on others but this one I did and I did achieve that goal. The overall thoughts on my artwork I made would be I learned I can make things when I slow down, look at the piece and then fix it then rushing a little and my project came out just how I wanted it to come out and I'm very proud of that. |
Ashley- Artist Statement: NYC SkycraperMy favorite art project I did was the landscape project. I was only in the class for the second half of the year and was in there for about 3-4 weeks so that was the only project I did. I enjoyed seeing what everyone else was creating around me. There were very good artists in my class and I enjoyed looking at what they were creating. What I personally did for the project was the cityscape of New York City. It wasn’t the greatest art piece I created but it was still an okayish piece. I personally liked the class as well. There were a lot of great people and artists in the class I was in. It was a nice, fun class to be in.

Hunter - Artist Statement: Relief SculptureMy art piece is a landscape using plaster, cardboard and spray paint. I used texture within the piece with the plaster by building it up with layers, I also used the spray paint to blend the colors in the background to make it balanced. I decided to add sand paper for the road to add texture and more color. What inspired me to make this piece is I go on a lot of road trips and also camping trips. My favorite thing when going on those trips is driving down country roads and seeing all the trees and mountains and wildlife. Even though I haven’t finished my project yet I think it still looks good. Once I get to finish it completely,I think it will turn out great! It is already better than my planning sketch.

Liz - Artist Statement: Stained GlassStained Glass
Independent Study My piece is a stained glass version of the Mandalorian helmet from the Disney TV show, The Mandalorian. The glass used was a variety of grays and pale dark blues. I then soldered the glass pieces together with silver metal. I drew out the helmet onto a thicker paper. Then I cut out the design with special scissors called pattern shears. After the design was cut I began to cut out the glass with a glass cutter that matched each one of the pieces for the design. Once I had all of the pieces I sanded down all the dumps that were on the glass. I then put copper lining around all of the glass pieces. I then soldered them all together. The tv show inspired me to make The Mandalorian as I am a very big Star Wars fan. I thought that it would be really cool to do a stained glass of something I love. My brother is also a big Star Wars fan and I thought that I would give it to him as a birthday gift. My goals for this project were to better my stain glass work and technique. I think that I did improve. I learned that I really like creating stained glass pieces. I also learned that it takes time, patience and practice as some shapes are difficult to cut out of glass. But over all my piece came out just as I wanted it to. |
Artist Statement: Kole D.Pop Art Printmaking
Studio in Art My favorite project we have done all year is the printmaking assignment. I liked it because it was a chance to be creative. In that I mean you could pick any subject material that was school appropriate and turn into your own. I also liked the overall theme of Pop Art because it looks simple and easy, yet complicated and artistic and is easily accessible to non-artists Another thing I liked about this project was the carving. Carving is something I am familiar with, but only with wood. The chance to carve linoleum was exciting and was very cool. |
Artist Statement: Dylan B.Luminary
Ceramics The piece I have chosen for my artist statement is the luminary I made this year, as not only is it my favorite, but it is the one I use the most as well. My luminary is in the form of a fox; and primarily orange with tan accents on the ‘muzzle’ and ears. It’s made from clay, which if my memory serves correct was low fire. All the glaze I used was glossy, minus the matte glaze I used on the nose. I felt as though a glossy nose would look a little strange. The title of my luminary is “Wild at Peace” because while foxes are fast and not (usually) domesticated, the fox form of my luminary is sat still, looking forward with its tail tucked close. I think the elements most obvious in my work are color and space. The fox is bright in color, which quickly draws attention, and the negative space where I placed holes allows for light to nicely shine through. The colors chosen for the fox also make it appear almost cartoonish, as actual foxes tend to be darker and have more variation. I feel as though my piece is well balanced, as the top portion (the face) has multiple colors to draw attention, and the bottom portion has holes to draw attention despite the lack of color variation. Therefore, no part of my piece over balances or takes the attention from the rest. As stated previously, my luminary is made from clay. I created the base of the luminary from an oval slab, and then continued to build up my form using both curved slabs and coils. The head was made from a clay ball I hollowed out. The details, being the mouth carved in as well as the holes that let light out, were all carved in using both a needle tool and a scoop after the clay had dried somewhat significantly. This was done to ensure that the piece wouldn’t collapse during the process. My piece was inspired by foxes themselves, as they are one of my favorite animals. The peaceful positioning, with the tail tucked in close, comes from the way I have seen foxes depicted in paintings over the years. I also wanted my luminary to be more vertical rather than horizontal, as a candles light can only reach so far. Another reasoning behind the calm pose is that when I use candles (which has actually been quite frequently as of late) I want to be in a calm and/or peaceful state of mind. I feel as though the luminary reflects the type of emotions I want to be feeling while the candle is lit. My goals while creating this piece were to make a functional piece that looks nice when in use, to make the form as vertical as possible while still maintaining the subject (the fox), and to make something difficult to break (as I am quite clumsy). I feel as though this piece did let me reach those goals, along with some others I did not originally have. For example, the piece pushed me to learn how to hollow out a small ball without ruining it, something that seems simple but I had never done before. The piece is functional, although I had to slightly sand down the candles entrance as it was too small, it looks like a fox, and all parts of the piece are thick enough to make it difficult to break- even if dropped. So, for the most part I would consider this project a success, as it helped me grow as an artist by being a form unlike any other I had tried to make out of clay before. This artwork also taught me that glazing holes, and the inside of hollow objects, is not easy. My only regret is that I did not spend longer working on the glaze, because as it is the colors all leak into each other, and overall the color looks a little messy. However, at least I know next time to take extra special care while glazing, which I put into practice when making our tea sets. |
